HP CASEdge vs. DEC COHESION
9/26/91
HP's open CASE strategy - CASEdge is based on:
o Open systems--solutions from HP and other vendors based on standards
o Non-proprietary solutions on multiple platforms
o Integrated tools from multiple vendors
o Enabling use of emerging technologies such as object-orientated
programming
o Protects investment by working with tools you have today
o CASE solutions for both the technical and commercial environments
HP has components for the three levels of CASE.
1. Stand-alone tools and shells. Over 50 HP and 3rd party products are
currently supported on HP systems.
2. Open integration. SoftBench is an open integration environment for
software development that provides integration of over 30 HP and 3rd
party tools into a commom user environment. Over 25 vendors have
committed to support SoftBench. SoftBench is tightly integrated with
C, C++, FORTRAN, Ada, and Pascal. The SoftBench with C++ is a strong
object-oriented development environment that is a real differentiator
for HP.
o IBM has licensed SoftBench for its RS/6000 AIX systems.
o Informix has licensed SoftBench as the foundation for its OpenCASE
products.
o SoftBench is available from HP on HP, Apollo and the Sun SPARC
platforms.
3. Integrated CASE. The industry-leading I-CASE solutions are
available on HP systems.
o CGI's PACLAN
o SoftLab's Maestro II
o TI's IEF
o Cognos's PowerCASE
For more information about HP's CASE strategy, see the CSY 3000, GSY
and WSG HOTLINEs, the HP 3000 Open CASE White Paper (p/n 5091-1072E),
or contact Software Engineering Systems Division (SESD).
DEC's COHESION
DEC's strategy is similar to HP, but is based more on DEC's own
solutions rather than integrating 3rd parties. For example, DEC's
Multicast Message Server (MCMS) is designed to have similar
capabilities as HP SoftBench, but is targeted to support DEC's own
tools.
DEC's approach is based on multivendor standards, but customer's should
always be aware of the proprietary DEC components, especially since
COHESION rides on top of NAS.
Currently, COHESION is available for both VMS and ULTRIX. Industry
consultants predict that COHESION will be available for other platforms
such as SCO Unix, IBM AIX and Sun SPARC in the next 18 months.
Consultants feel that DEC's CDD/Repository is not complete and will not
be complete before 1993. It currently lacks full support for run-time
systems, systems management or non-DEC network management. Management
of the CDD/Repository is likely to be a full-time job for a senior
professional.
DEC counts on the developers to modify their tools to work within DEC's
environment (A Tool Integration Standard-ATIS). The following
solutions are integrated or will be integrated by 1992:
Upper-CASE Tools
o Cadre Technologies' ADAS and Teamwork o Verilog's ASA and GEODE
o DEC's DECdesign and Program Design Facility
o Index Technology's Excelerator
o Anderson Consulting's Foundation
o DEC/Tangent's Hood-SF and SSADM-SF
o D. Appleton's IDEF/Leverage
o TI's IEF
o Interactive Development's Software Through Pictures
o X IGL Technology's SPECIF
o i-Logix's STATEMATE
Lower-CASE Tools
o CorVision
o FOCUS
o MANTIS
o NATURAL
o NETRON/CAP
o PowerHouse
o SMARTSTAR
